The Art Shed, WinscombeWhat’s in a change of name? The Mendip Painting Centre, which was founded forty years ago by Peter Coate RWA and taken over by Ros and David Cuthbert in 1985, has seen a gradual change in the demands and interests of our members. In the 1980s there was a strong core of ‘English impressionism’ inspired by the enthusiasm of Arthur Maderson who taught a class back then.
As people have become more aware of the great variety that there is in the visual arts their visual curiosity has increased and a much wider range of possibilities has opened up. The Art Shed is a place where you will be encouraged to explore ideas and to learn about painting in a practical sense. It is a place where David and Ros provide visual stimulation through illustrated talks on art and artists. To provide a focus for each class there is always a project. You may have your own ideas that you want to pursue – that’s fine too, as both Ros and David have many years of teaching experience at many levels, from school age to post-graduate. For beginners and for more experienced painters there will continue to be a strong emphasis on observation and painting technique, whether that is oil, watercolour, acrylic, gouache or pastel. The Art Shed is for people who want to paint and draw and for those who are curious to find out if they can make a picture. If you are short of time try an evening class, it is a great opportunity to exercise some creativity that may well feed back into your daily work. You might be retired and looking for an absorbing pastime or you might want to improve a folder of work ahead of applying for a place at university. The Art Shed welcomes everyone who wants to improve their drawing, their way with paint. The Art Shed welcomes everyone who is curious about art and what they might do with it. The Art Shed welcomes everyone who fancies having a go. Call us on 01934 842970 or email yellowfoxfineart@yahoo.co.uk
