Wherever Ros sings, her audiences are delighted by the quality of her singing and the warmth and depth of the textures of her voice. She has developed a unique vocal sound. Her material ranges from jazz standards to moderns such as Miles Davis and Kenny Wheeler, and includes latin, blues, rock, pop and her own material.

Ros has been singing solo for ten years. She cut her teeth with an own material rock band. Then for two years she sang with Bristol jazz band Longwave Quintet. In those two years she gave four concerts, one of them at the QEH theatre, Bristol, and two in the Blakehay Theatre, Weston super Mare. The fourth was in Winscombe as part of the North Somerset Arts Week. Courses in jazz and song writing she has attended include summer schools at Glamorgan University and Silsoe College, Chard Festival For Women in Music and Ray Davis’ song writing course at the Arvon Foundation.  Ros has appeared with the Nadia Sheriffe Quartet on Swan Hellenic’s cruise ship Minerva, and was also a guest artist at Cheltenham International Jazz Festival’s Fringe Party. She loves giving concerts, gigs regularly in local drinking and eating venues and also sings at private functions.

In 2006 she sang at the Gala night of the Hythe Imperial Jazz Festival, Hythe, Kent and she gave concerts for the Keynsham Music Festival & Weston-super-Mare Arts Festival. She also gave a Latin concert at the Friends' Meeting House, Sidcot, Winscombe with a band including pianist Shannon Harris, who worked for two years with Wheatus in the USA and is currently on a world tour with Lilly Allen.

In autumn 2004 Ros produced her first CD on her own label, Yellow Fox Records. ‘Two Sides to Lucky’ was recorded at the White House Recording Studio, Worle, with the Alex Steele Trio. The launch took place at a concert at St. James’ Church Hall, Winscombe, North Somerset on May 14th 2005. An item in the North Somerset Arts Week, it was a sell-out.

The Alex Steele Group plays a wide range of modern jazz, for different types of audiences, ranging from concert-style public performances through to private functions, and covering material from jazz standards to latin, funky and dance-based modern jazz.  The line-up in the group varies, and can include the core trio (piano, bass and drums) with different options including saxophones, trumpets and guitars.

Regular double bassist with the group is Clive Morton, long-time sideman with Frank Sinatra, Stephane Grappelli, and many other jazz greats, and the inspirational jazz tutor of Jamie Cullum.

Bandleader, Alex Steele, has a high profile on national and international jazz circuits, and is well known as a passionate and inspired performer, taking his own inspirations from the likes of Thelonious Monk, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett.

Ros would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in booking her  for private or public functions. As well as the Alex Steele Trio she works with well established Bristol musicians including keyboard players Andy Nowak,  Anders Olinder and John Lambert, bass guitarists Jeff Spencer and Jim Pimpernell & drummers Andy Tween and Clive Deamer.

Reviews

Review of 'Two Sides To Lucky' in 'The Musician'    Winter 2005

This is an attractive jazz combo that places Ros Cuthbert's bright and clear vocals at the front, with a precise and tight backing supplied by Alex Steele (keys), Clive Morton (double bass) and Matthew Jones (drums). With selections from the American songbook including Mercer and Arlen's Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home, plus Bernstein's Lucky To Be Me, West Country-based Ros is a confident and cool performer with a developing talent and deserving of a wider audience.

Review in Mid Somerset Newspapers: Old Down Acoustic Club, Reviewer Cathy Judge.

Ros from Winscombe took our breath away when she opened her mouth to sing. It is surprising that she is not a regular of the folk circuit as her voice is strong, beautiful and unique.

Paul Gray, Musicians Union Officer, South West Region:

I loved your CD, and enjoyed your own songs even more than the standards

Derek Briggs – jazz journalist, Gloucestershire Media

Ros guested at Cheltenham Film Studios with Jim Mullen (guitar), Alex Steele (piano), Clive Morton (double bass), David Bill (drums)

What better way to spend a summer’s evening than in the lovely gardens and concert room of the old Dowty mansion? Especially when in the company of the splendid guitarist Jim Mullen and the Alex Steele Trio, one third of which was mine host David Bills at the drums.

Mullen revels in embroidering chord structures. The theme of The Good Life got short shrift before the Scot was heading for open country, setting shards of the melody against an attractive improvised vamp.

Like his hero, Wes Montgomery, Mullen strikes the strings with his thumb rather than a plectrum, and his warm beautiful tone lent special magic to his solo feature The Nearness of You.

The guitarist struck up a warm musical relationship with pianist Alex Steele, and the two swapped phrases with humour and aptitude on Take the A Train.

Clive Morton, the veteran bassist and an early mentor to jazz star Jamie Cullum, walked the pulse with great aplomb throughout, and his fine toned soloing was a delight.

Singer Ros Cuthbert joined in with a sexy and bluesy version of Black Coffee worthy of Peggy Lee, and all too soon a fun evening was over, played out with Mullen’s straight take on Robbie Burns’ Red Red Rose.

Keith Warmington, BBC Radio Bristol: 'This really is an excellent CD!'

Bryan Gray, The Note (Issue 19, July 2007)

The Rose of Denmark

Ros Cuthbert, who I first met a few months ago at a Musicians Union workshop at Colston Hall, turned up with guitar and CD in hand. Her CD, entitled Two Sides to Lucky" features Ros performing her own material which is jazz based. Anyway Ros launched into her set which was a unique mix of folk and jazz originality and covers. Ros has an outstanding voice which sounds a little like Eartha Kitt but not quite as harsh and with more warmth. Ros as you have probably guessed is a jazz singer which was all the more interesting when applied to folk type songs, needless to say she went down a storm. If you want to find out more about Ros visit www.yellowfox.org.uk/music you will not be disappointed.
