THE YELLOW FOX PRESS

Proprietor: Ros Cuthbert

The Yellow Fox Press is a one-woman venture, begun in 1993 with Islands, a book of poems by John Crook and three of my full-page wood engravings. I printed the engravings using a Columbian Press that was once owned by Blair Hughes-Stanton who taught me during the seventies.

I am a painter and wood engraver, not a typographer, so my books are produced in co-operation with a printer who organizes the setting and printing of the text while I use my Columbian for the engravings. The first four books I made are all hand sewn by me. HLEP! was bound by Frank Brown.

As well as Islands, four other books have been completed: Birdsong and Water, poems by Francis Horovitz, and Nature Studies with poetry by Philip Gross. Bouncing boy, poetry by Helen Dunmore, and HLEP! poetry by Gerard Benson. They all contain three of my full-page wood engravings or, as in HLEP! three woodcuts.

In 1991 he won the Signal Poetry Award for his anthology This Poem Doesn’t Rhyme. HLEP! was hand-set and printed on Zerkall paper by Simon King, for Yellow Fox Press.

Islands

Three poems by John Crook with wood engravings by Ros Cuthbert.

John Crook has studied animal behaviour in the field for many years and now researches village life in the Himalayas. His marriage to a Greek in 1968 stimulated his interest in Greek culture. He has written many poems but published little. The three published here celebrate his love of Greece and its island culture.

The text of the poems was typeset in Monotype Baskerville 169 by Tom Shaw. The title pages were hand-set by the printer, Penelope Hughes-Stanton. The three full-page engravings were printed from the original blocks by the artist at the Press. The paper is mould-made Zerkall and the cover paper Tumba Tre Kroner.

The book measures 240mm by 160mm.

Birdsong and Water

Nine poems by Frances Horovitz, with wood engravings by Ros Cuthbert.

Frances Horovitz is well known as a poet of the landscape. Her powerful imagery weaves timelessness into the ephemeral present. She was also a very fine poetry reader, earning love and respect for her readings both on radio and in public performances. She published four collections of her own work: Poems (1967), The High Tower (1970), Water over Stone (1980), and Snow Light, Water Light (1983).

She chose to live in remote parts of England: the Slad Valley in Gloucestershire, Kiln Hill near Hadrian's Wall, and Orcop in Herefordshire. It was here that she succumbed to cancer of the ear, dying in October 1983 at the age of 45.

The text of the poems was typeset in Monotype Baskerville 169 by Brian Hubbard. The titles were hand-set by the printer, Penelope Hughes-Stanton. The three full-page engravings were printed from the original blocks by the artist at the Press. The paper is mould-made Zerkall, with Fabriano Ingres endpapers and Inveresk Plain Blue Cover.

The book measures 240mm by 160mm. 120 copies.
